Alcântara is located in the continent, in the occidental coast,  in Golfão Maranhense. It is a historical city from the XVII century. During the colonial period it used to be a prosperous city, but nowadays it is practilcally in ruins. It preservs an african legacy till nowadays. With nice historical sites, good food and a very intersting colonial landscape, during the month of May it is the stage for the Divino Espirito Santo party, the biggest profane-religious event of the state.

In contrast, it is in Alcantara that is located the very modern rockets and satellites launchig station.

The best time to visit Alcantara is during the Divino Espirito Santo party that takes places during May.

Another suggestion is to visit the old "Tapuitapera", the indigenous name of the city and find yourself back to the past. To spend a night in the city is another nice option.
