São Luís island is formed by the capital São Luís, São José de Ribamar, Paço do Lumiar and Raposa counties. In São Luís the Historical Center was completely reformed and is considered by UNESCO as Historical Humanity Heritage. It has one of the greatest set of colonial buidings in Brasil formed of about 3500 buildings dated from the XVIII and XIX centuries distributed around Praia Grande, desterro and Portinho districts.
In the historical center you can find cinemas, museums, bars, restaurants, handcraft stores and hotels. Sao Luis is also known as Jamaica Basileira, due to the reaggae music that is also present in the nightclubs.
Many beaches like Ponta D'areia, Calhau, Olho D'Água, Araçagy are near and are hot all over the year. The tempearture in the island is about 25 degrees Celsius. The summertime is from June to December.

There is very much to do in São Luís. A nice start is a tour around the historical center. Among stone streets, squares and stairs there is so much to see. Old buildings with the famous portuguese tiles, belveders, terraces and monuments. If you prefer the nature you just have to remeber thar you are in an island sorrounded by lots of beautiful beaches. Ponta D'Areia, Calhau, Olho D'Água, e Araçagy are some options. The nice gastronomy is another thing to know. The main dishes are Cuxa rice, the fish, shimp, typical sweets, fruit and juices.
For those who love parties, June is is one of the best months in the capital. Bumba-meu-boi, tambor de crioula and quadrilha are some attactions during the joyful parties in reverence to Santo Antônio, São João, São Pedro e São Marçal, very popular saints in the northeast.
The Carnival is also very funny and diferent from the other cities in Brazil. the carnival is still like in the old times with the traditional figures of the pierrôs, dominós and fofões all around the city. The Divino Espírito Santo party, a catholic pary takes place all over year with the main moment in May in Alcantara city.
